Upcoming Paddles...
Saturday August 14 - On August 14 (Saturday), there will be a canoe tour of the suburban Pine Island Ponds Loop between Herring Cove and Spryfiled (HRM). The event is co-sponsored by Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia and the McIntosh Run Watershed Association. There is no rain date, and in case of inclement weather the event will be cancelled.
We shall meet at 1:00 PM in Herring Cove at the junction of John Brackett Drive (Highway 253) and Powers Drive, next to Powers Pond. We expect to stop at the blueberry (and huckleberry) grounds of the recently burned area off East Pine Island Pond, and probably swim off the well-known "swimming rock."
There are short portages between the six ponds on the route, which therefore isn't suitable for sea kayaks. A limited number of loaner canoes is available. The route is only about 5 km in length, but includes a variety of shorelines and habitats, with opportunities to explore nearby informal trails. Positive RSVPs only please, at

Saturday August 21st - Coastal Plain Flora Canoe Trip and Lunch on the Tusket River: Join the Nature Trust, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, and Nova Scotia Environment's Protected Areas branch for a lovely paddling trip in the Tusket River watershed. We will meet near the community of Quinan in southwest Nova Scotia (location details will be provided with RSVP), and will paddle Bennetts Lake to view rare and beautiful Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora. At this event, we will also celebrate the recent protection properties that provide habitat to these endangered species. Paddle begins at 10:00am, and ends at 12:00pm. Join us afterwards for a free lunch, and a property announcement. Canoes available for free on a first-come, first-served basis, or bring your own.

August 22 Blue Rocks - lead by Blair Doyle We are due to meet at 9:30 and I would like to be underway by 10-ish on the water. Basic plan for the day is to lunch stop on one of the islands and be back late afternoon. ( READ: bring a lunch) The route will be driven by the wind / weather and abilities of those that come - all levels are welcome. For instance - lots of seal to see off hound ledges if the sea state allows. In that light - those that are interested can email me at:

Thanks Blair Doyle

Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia would like to welcome its newest club; PADDLE ANTIGONISH! Here is a little bit of what they are all about....
We are a group of paddling enthusiasts sharing a common mission—promote safe informed paddling for all. If you would like to share some time on the water practicing your paddling skills, passing along your knowledge coaching others, hoping to pick up a few tips and techniques, or needing a tandem partner to explore some wonderful water trails around Antigonish, we would welcome your membership. We are an affiliate club, recognized by CKNS and all participants of PA must become members of CKNS to access association benefits. To register your membership ($10) with CKNS please go to http://www.ckns.ca
Introduction to Canoeing Would you like to learn how to paddle a canoe and explore the Antigonish Harbour around the Antigonish Sail & Paddle Club? All required equipment will be provided, however participants can bring their own. You can decide if you want to paddle recreationally or seek a few instructional tips, but no certifications will be offered. If you are uncertain of your skill, you can be partnered with an experienced paddler to help you with the basics until you are comfortable. As this is a recognized and sanctioned CKNS activity participants must be a member. Cost is "free" and we will meet weekly weather permitting, Thursday evenings at the Antigonish Sail and Club. Start date Thurs May 20 from 6–9 p.m. until October 22. If you need equipment or would like to work on your canoeing skills email Andrew Foran
