Every sport needs equipment and reading/viewing materials. CKNS has both videos and books that are available to members on loan, and the province has a variety of retailers and guiding and training resources.

Below you will find a list of videos stocked by CKNS. These videos are available for loan to CKNS members. The member is responsible for returning the video to the CKNS office at their own expense in addition to paying $3 for the initial shipping fee. Beyond the Cockpit:
Produced by the folks from USK (University if Seakayaking, the folks who are also responsible for ACapsize and Rescue Procedures@) it features Derek Hutchinson as lead instructor. Derek is one of the fathers of modern seakayaking, and his long experience as a top-level BCU instructor gets soon evident when he starts explaining the skills needed to paddle beyond the cockpit.

 

CANOE IS FOR EVERYONE

Description: This video is designed to illustrated how those persons with a disability can be integrated into mainstream canoe programming ( I.e. trips, lessons, ect.)

 

Capsize Recoveries and Rescue Procedures (volume 1) (VHS)
Description: Instructors demonstrate various assisted and unassisted recovering techniques with different kayak types including sit on top, folding boat, and double sea kayak. Some of the other rescue techniques covered include the Eskimo rescue; T- or TX recovery and the paddle float re-entry.

Capsize Recoveries & Rescue Procedures (volume 2) (VHS)

Description: The first section of the tape is a discussion about hypothermia and possible treatments, followed by a "What to wear" dress code show. Techniques not already covered in the first tape deal with the rescue of injured or passed out paddlers. Towing and ways of stabilizing incapacitated paddlers close the technical section. The final part of the tape deals with ways to call in outside assistance if you are caught out in the water.

 

Classic Solo Canoeing:
Is a superbly crafted video that is both informative and beautiful to watch. Becky's extraordinary skills coupled with some spectacular scenery and Ian Tamblyn's original sound track make this a unique and charming production.
Becky Mason, in this innovative new instructional canoeing video, takes you along in her red cedar canvas canoe to some of her favorite places where land and water meet. You'll learn to apply the classic solo paddling strokes simply and gracefully, master the art of the portage, and pick up tips on canoe safety, maintenance, and equipment selection.


COLD, WET, and ALIVE (VHS)
Description: This video tape focuses on how a person gets hypothermia in a recreational setting. Computer animation depicting thermograms is used throughout the production to visually document the effect of hypothermia on the body. Traditional topics such as what hypothermia is and what to do once a person suffers from it are also covered.

 

Composite Canoe Repair: (VHS)
This video takes an in-depth look at how to repair laminates, broken ribs, gunwales, etc. No book covers the topic this well. The video also shows how to keep the hull looking new; mounting a yoke or foot brace; and renewing wood trim. We-no-nah produced this for their dealers, so it may be more complete than you need, but it includes lots of general material that you'll find helpful.

CRCA Introduction Tape (VHS)
Description: This video is in two parts, the first is an introduction to Canoe across Canada and talks about the history of canoeing in Canada and how it can be enjoyed by everyone, anywhere. The second part talks about safety issues when you are out on the water and gives you a very basic introduction to paddling and tripping. It also talks about some of the things to look at when going on a trip and all the aspects of planning this.


Cry of the Wild
An attempt to dispel the myth of the bloodthirsty wolf Bill Mason directed this fascinating outdoor adventure film. Facing near death alone in the barrens to prove his theory about wolves.

 

Death of a Legend (VHS)
Directed by Bill Mason a look at the wolf and whether it deserves its reputation as an enemy of man. Mason produces some of the most up close photography of wolves that has ever been achieved.

 

DIGGING WATER- a voyage by north canoe (DVD)

Description: Digging Water is the voyage of over 300 paddlers as re-trace the exploration route of the  famous land  geographer, David Thompson, from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, to Thunder Bay, Ontario. This DVD chronicles their journey through across four provinces, across three drainages, and back through nearly twwo centuries of Canadian history and culture. The DVD also explores their struggle with the harsh Canadian climate, and deadly wilderness.

Description: This video outlines the roles, responsibilities and organisation of ground search and rescue services in Canada. Also, this video explores the role of local authorities and law enforcement officers in the practise of search and rescue, and also the resources used in such incidents. Operation Ground Search takes viewers through an overview of the typical command structure of a search and rescue situation.

Description: Bill Mason demonstrates the basic strokes for controlling the canoe. Animated lines show clearly what the paddle is doing.

Learn how to paddle more efficiently, go further and faster, recover from capsizes, and unlock the secrets of the Eskimo roll.

 

RESCUE FOR RIVER RUNNERS
Description: This film is an excellent portrayal of rescue techniques for canoers, kayakers and rafting enthusiasts. A must for anyone who paddles in moving water.

Path of the Paddle Series (DVD)

Compilation of Bill Mason Path of the Paddle videos. Solo Basic and Doubles Basic demonstrate basic strokes while maintaining control in a canoe. Solo Whitewater and Doubles Whitewater focus on reading the rapids and using basic paddling strokes to reduce the risk in whitewater canoeing.

Paddle to the Sea
Bill Mason directed this adapted children’s story about an Indian boy who sets out to carve a man and a canoe. He calls the man “Paddle to the Sea.” He sets the carving down on a frozen stream to await the coming of spring. The film charts the adventures that befall the canoe.
